Solid Faces – bändi huolehtii Purple Night – illassa pääasiassa Deep Purplen tuotannosta. Tämän Pietarsaarelaisen orkesterin armoton kitaristi on Henric Blomqvist. Henric aloitti kitaransoiton 10 – vuotiaana ja opiskeli paikallisessa musiikkiopistossa klassista kitaraa 7 vuotta. Henric oli klassisen kitaransoiton ohella kuitenkin digannut Hendrixiä ja Claptonia ja veljiensä mukana veri alkoi vetää kitaransoitossa rokimpaan suuntaan. Klassinen kitara heitettiin seinään ja Henric liittyi Metal Force – bändiin. Hän vaikutti myöhemmin myös Peter Nylund Wildbrainissa. Tämän jälkeen ”Henkka” perehtyi metallialan olemukseen perinpohjin kuten Tony Iommi aikoinaan paikallisessa metallialan yrityksessä ja hioi taitojaan uutta tulemista varten. Uusi ylösnousemus koitti vuonna 2006, jolloin tuhkasta nousi bändi nimeltä Solid Faces. Ja bändin musiikillinen linja olikin sitten parasta A- ryhmää: Deep Purplen, Rainbown ja Whitesnaken musiikkia. Aivan turhasta kitaristista ei ole kysymys, sillä itse Doogie White (mm. Michael Schenker, Rainbow ja Yngwie Malmsten) kelpuutti miehen kitaristiksi Suomen keikoilleen vuonna 2009. Solid Faces on kunnostautunut viime aikoina tekemällä Tribute – levyn Purple sukupuun bändien musiikista.

Bänditreeneissä oli Henkkakin viikonlopun vapaapäivänsä viettänyt ja Purple Night – settiä oli höylätty metalliammattimiehen tarkkuudella. Settilista on jo hyvin kuosissa ja enää kulmia sieltä vähän hiotaan.

HB: ”Kyllä joo sieltä löytyy semmoiset 17 biisiä. Lähinnä Deep Purplen kappaleita. Solid faces – bändin laulajan, Johan Mattjuksen lisäksi lavalla vierailee setin aikana myös muita alan laulajaässiä kuten Jukka Nummi (Angry Machines), Jari Tiura (Stargazer, Snakegod, ex- Michael Schenker Group) ja Peter James Goodman (Conquest, Purple Society, Virtuocity). Täytyy kyllä sanoa, että Purplen ”Who Do We think We are” on todella mielenkiintoinen levy soittaa. ”Woman from Tokyo” – kappaleen lisäksi suosikkini levyllä on ”Smooth Dancer”. Ja joo, innostusta lisää varmasti se, että soitamme Purple Night – keikalla Deep Purplen biisejä, joita harvemmin kuulee livenä. Joitain biisejä ei ainakaan You tubessa ole löytynyt kenenkään esittämänä”.

Kitaristi Henkka Blomqvistin lisäksi Solid Faces – bändissä on mukana äsken mainittu laulaja Johan Mattjus, kosketinsoittaja Sven Wannäs, basisti Anders Thors ja Henkan kanssa pitkään yhdessä soittanut rumpali Roger Snellman. Bändin soittajat ovat jo useita vuosia soitelleet Pietarsaaren alueella ja ympäri Suomea. Rainbown ja Michael Schenkerin laulajana ollut Doogie Whitekin saatiin Suomeen pienelle kiertueelle bändin laulajaksi vuonna 2009.

HB: ”Se oli aivan uskomatonta, että saimme Doogien mukaan. Pietarsaaren alueella toimiva Marko Pukkila järjesti Doogie White – keikkakiertueen Suomessa kontaktiensa avulla. Doogie on todellinen ammattilainen mutta myös rento, Down to earth – kaveri. Solid Faces – bändistä Sven Wannäs oli myös mukana tuossa Doogie White – projektissa. Doogie tuli myöhemmin uudestaan Suomeen parille toiselle keikalle, jossa myös soitimme hänen taustallaan. Niin ja joo, Purple Night – keikalla laulava Jukka Nummi tuli laulamaan Doogien kanssa pari biisiä. Meillä on jonkun verran ollut Jukan kanssa yhteistyötä”.

JL: ”Haluatko kertoa lisää tästä yhteistyöstä?”.

HB: ”Mahdollisesti tänä vuonna minulta on tulossa soololevy, johon olen pyytänyt mukaan eri laulajia. Levyllä kuullaan Jukka Nummi muutamassa kappaleessa, Jari Tiura ja Doogie White on myös luvannut olla mukana. Lisäksi Solid Faces julkaisee tribuuttilevyn, jolla soitamme Deep Purplen, Raibown ja Whitesnaken musiikkia. Tuo tribuuttilevy taitaakin olla myynnissä jo Purple Night 2013 – tapahtumassa”. Levyn nimi on A Tribute to Classic Rock.

JL: ”Kuulostaa siltä, että sinulta ja bändiltäsi on tulossa kovia levyjä. Purple Night – teemaan liittyy tänä vuonna myös se, että kunnioitamme Jon Lordin ja Ronnie Dion muistoa. Mitä tulee mieleen näiden herrojen tekemästä musiikista?”

HB: ”Kyllä Jon Lord on ehdottomasti yksi suosikeistani kosketinsoittajien joukossa. Hänen saundinsa ja yhteensoittonsa eri kitaristien ja erityisesti Ritchie Blackmoren kanssa on ollut upeaa. Deep Purplella on ollut omaan musiikkiini ja kitaransoittooni suuri vaikutus. Jon Lordin biiseistä tulee ensimmäisenä mieleen ”Perfect Strangers” – biisi ja sen loistava urkuintro. Ronnie Diosta sen verran, että hänhän oli tai on eittämättä yksi maailman parhaista heavy – laulajista. Kitaristina minun täytyy sanoa, että Diosta mieleeni tulee ensimmäisenä hänen Rainbow – kautensa kappale ”Kill the King”. Se on kova”.

JL: ”Lopuksi kysytään, että tuota niin että, mitäs pidät Deep Purplen uudesta ”Now What?! – levystä?”.

HB: ”Joo, levyä on kuunneltu kyllä. Se taitaa olla sellainen levy, joka ikään kuin paranee jokaisella kuuntelukerralla ja siitä pitää enemmän ja enemmän. Soittajien valtava kokemus kuuluu soitossa ja biiseissä. Se on myös jännä levy sikäli, että toisaalta kuulee, että musiikki on Purplea, mutta toisaalta hieman erilainen Purple tällä kertaa. Jari Tiuran kanssa keskustelimme äskettäin ja mietittiin, että Deep Purple osaa tehdä nykyajan massamusiikista (joka unohdetaan saman tien) sopivasti poikkeavaa musiikkia ja on tehnyt niin sanottuja ajattomia kestohittejä. Eiköhän näistä uuden levyn kappaleista jotkut muodostu ns. klassikoiksi, joita soitamme sitten 10 vuoden kuluttua Purple Night – keikalla”, Henkka nauraa.

Interviewing Purple Night 2013 performers:

Band Solid Faces mostly looks after Deep Purple’s back catalogue at Purple Night. The ruthless guitarist of this Jakobstad based ensemble is Henric Blomqvist. Henric started to play guitar at the age of ten and studied classic guitar at a local music institute for seven years. Besides classic guitar, Henric had taken a liking to Hendrix and Clapton, and along with his brothers he was pulled in a rockier direction. The classic guitar was smashed into a wall, and Henric joined a band called Metal Force. He later also played in Peter Nylund Wildbrain. After this ”Henkka” thoroughly familiarised himself with the metal industry, like Tony Iommi, in a local metal business and honed his skills for a new coming. The resurrection happened in 2006 when a band called Solid Faces rose from the ashes. And the band’s musical direction was of the highest grade A quality; music by Deep Purple, Rainbow and Whitesnake. He’s no useless guitarist as Doogie White (e.g. Michael Schenker, Rainbow and Yngwie Malmsten) himself accepted him as a guitarist for his Finnish gigs in 2009. Solid Faces has recently distinguished themselves by making a tribute album featuring music by bands of the Purple bloodline.

Band practice is where Henkka had also spent his days off over the weekend, and they had perfected their Purple Night set with the precision of a metal professional. The setlist is in good shape and only needs a little polishing round the edges.

HB: ”Yeah, there’s about 17 songs in there. Mostly Deep Purple songs. Besides the Solid Faces singer, Johan Mattjus, we’ll have other ace singers step up to the stage during the set, such as Jukka Nummi (Angry Machines), Jari Tiura (Stargazer, Snakegod, ex Michael Schenker Group) and Peter James Goodman (Conquest, Purple Society, Virtuocity). I must say that Purple’s Who Do We Think We Are is a very interesting album to play. Apart from “Woman from Tokyo”, my favourite from the album is “Smooth Dancer”. And yes, it probably adds to our enthusiasm that in our Purple Night set we will play Deep Purple songs that are not often heard live. For example, there were no postings on YouTube for some of these songs.

Besides guitarist Henkka Blomqvist, Solid Faces includes the aforementioned singer Johan Mattjus, keyboardist Sven Wannäs, bassist Anders Thors and drummer Roger Snellman, who has played with Henkka for a long time. The band members have for several years played in the Jakobstad area and around Finland. Even Doogie White, singer from Rainbow and Michael Schenker, came to front the band on a small tour of Finland in 2009.

HB: ”It was absolutely incredible that we got Doogie to join us. Marko Pukkila, who operates in the Jakobstad area, organised Doogie White’s Finnish tour via his contacts. Doogie is an absolute professional but also a laid-back, down to earth dude. Sven Wannäs from Solid Faces was also involved in the Doogie White project. Doogie later returned to Finland for another couple of shows when we also played in his backing band. Oh yes, and Jukka Nummi, who will sing at Purple Night, also came to do a couple of songs with Doogie. We’ve had some collaboration with Jukka.

JL: ”Do you want to tell more about this collaboration?”

HB: ”I’ll possibly have a solo album out this year for which I have enrolled a few singers. Jukka Nummi will be on a few tracks, Jari Tiura, and Doogie White has also promised to join in. Additionally, Solid Faces is releasing a tribute album where we play music by Deep Purple, Rainbow and Whitesnake. That tribute album should be on sale by the time Purple Night 2013 comes around. The album is called A Tribute to Classic Rock.

JL: ”Sounds like you and your band are about to release some mean albums. Associated to the Purple Night theme this year is also respecting the memory of Jon Lord and Ronnie Dio. What comes to mind on these gentlemen’s music?

HB: ”Jon Lord is definitely one of my favourite keyboardists. His sound and playing with different guitarists and particularly with Ritchie Blackmore has been fantastic. Deep Purple has had a huge influence on my own music and guitar playing. Out of Jon Lord’s songs the first one that comes to mind is “Perfect Strangers” and its magnificent organ intro. Just on Ronnie Dio, he was or is without a doubt one of the best heavy singers in the world. As a guitarist I must say that the first song that comes to mind is “Kill the King” from his Rainbow days. It’s intense.

JL: ”Finally let’s ask what you make of Deep Purple’s new Now What?! album?”

HB: ”Yes, I’ve been listening to the album. It’s probably one of those albums that sort of improves with each listen and you like it more and more. The players’ unparalleled experience can be heard in their playing and songs. It’s also a remarkable album in that on one hand you can hear that it’s Purple, yet at the same time a slightly different Purple this time. I spoke to Jari Tiura recently, and we were thinking that Deep Purple can make music that is amply different from modern mass-produced music, which is forgotten about straightaway, and has made so-called timeless classic hits. I’d say some of the songs from the new album will become so-called classics that we will play at Purple Night in ten years’ time, Henkka laughs.
